With more than two million items in its collection, Vancouver Public Library is the second largest public library in all of Canada. The library’s main branch, the Center Branch, covers an entire city block in downtown Vancouver, called the Library Square. The Center Branch is an incredible nine stories tall and is surrounded by free-standing walls that contain reading and studying rooms.

Featured above, the Theological Hall was constructed all the way back in 1779. Since then, it has seen all sorts of historical tumult, namely the communist takeover in 1950.

Constructed between 1880 and 1887, Rio de Janeiro’s Royal Portuguese Reading Room (The Real Gabinete Português de Leitura) houses the largest and most valuable collection of Portuguese literature outside of, well, Portugal.
Designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Gordon Bunshaft, Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds the rather esoteric title of the world’s largest building dedicated to the preservation of rare books and manuscripts. Ranging from 16th century texts to ancient papyri to personal papers of modern writers, the Beinecke is a site not to be missed by logophiles.

If you want access to this seminal European library, you must agree to a formal declaration. While the “Bud’s” roots can be traced further than its oft-cited 1602 founding, Oxford University’s Bodleian Library has a heritage as rich as its book collection.
